In the graph, 3 color units, blue, orange and green, connect in a way to form a sphere, in which for each unit its head is connected to the tail of the second unit, and so on. The sphere implies the philosophy of the Center: open-mindedness and tolerance, multiple thoughts and their melting, collaboration and innovation. It also shows that the 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials (2011۰iChEM), consists of 4 kernel members, Xiamen University (XMU), Fudan University (FDU), University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), will work collaboratively for innovation in the fields of carbon resource and its optimal utilization, chemical energy storage and conversion, and chemistry for conversion of solar energy. All of these three research fields will be academically supported by activities in synthesis and fabrication, theory and simulation, and instrumentation and methodology, and will be implemented in trinity of discipline construction, personnel training and scientific research. The center of the sphere is a flying fire phoenix and in a shape of character E. Fire is the most original form for people to utilize energy, and flying fire phoenix is a beautiful bird eager for sun in the fairy tale. E is initial character of the word of Energy, symbolizing a promising future for chemistry of energy materials for the Center.

The text part of the logo is 2011۰iChEM, where the number of "2011" represents "2011-Program", the abbreviation of "Promotion Plan of Innovation Capability for Universities", and "i" means not only "innovation" but also "international", representing an innovative idea to internationalize the Center . The lively and dynamic anthropomorphic shape of "i" embody the ideas of struggling and leapfrog development for all of the staff in the Center; "ChEM" is not only the abbreviation of "Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials", but also the abbreviation of "Chemistry". Furthermore, the lower case "h" represents "harmonization", indicating the characteristics of research in the Center where chemistry is base, material is carrier, energy is target and they are harmonically combined together; A tiny globe, representing the earth, is located between "2011" and "iChEM", indicating that the goal of the Center is to serve for the national energy strategy and to lead the way for research in chemistry in the world.
