The iChEM Professor Yi Xie (USTC) received 2013 International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering Award, sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS). She is the first Chinese women scientist to be honored for this award. The award was initiated at the IUPAC World Chemistry Congress during a symposium entitled “Are women still underrepresented in science?” on August 2, 2011 inPuerto Rico, and designed to acknowledge and promote the work of women chemists and chemical engineers worldwide. As part of the overall project supported by an ACS Challenge Grant, the Award recipients will share information on their research and roles in web-based interviews.

The award is selected biannually and only accepts nominations from three world renowned scholars and their independently submitted recommendation letters. Based on achievements of the candidates in the fields of both basic research of chemistry and chemical engineering and education management and leadership, the World Award Committee will vote for final selections. The other eleven women scientists also received this award, including Prof. Elsa Reichmanis at Georgia Institute of Technology and 2003 President of American Chemical Society, and Prof. Irina Beletskaya at Moscow State University and an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, etc. The Award ceremony will be held at the 44th IUPAC World Chemistry Congress on August 11,2013 inIstanbul,Turkey.
