On November 18, 2015, The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), established 32 years ago, had its 26th General Meeting in Vienna, Austria. TWAS being headquartered in Italy held the first meeting outside its headquarters giving chance to other developed countries to take part in organizing the event. Chunli Bai, the President of TWAS and CAS, presided the meeting with an opening ceremony, Heinz Fischer, President of Austria, Reinhold Mitterlehner, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the scientific research and economy attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. More than 300 scientists from 60 countries worldwide, the science and technology ministers and their representatives from more than ten countries, as well as the international organizations on behalf of the council attended the meeting in discussing about common concerns in the field of science and technology that promotes global sustainable development.
This meeting elected 44 academicians from developing countries, in which 14 belongs to China. These 14 members consist of 2 iChEM academicians Yi Xie and Zhongfan Liu. Prof. Yi Xie (USTC), member of CAS, well known for her outstanding contribution in inorganic solid state chemistry at nanoscale, especially in inorganic functional solids with modulated electron and phonon structures is a renowned staff and an Academic Committee member of our center. Prof. Zhongfan Liu (Peking Univ.) also a member of CAS, well known for his new methods which offered a highly-efficient route for modulating the energy band structures of graphene towards nanoelectronics is also an Academic Committee member of our center.
Both the academicians, Yi Xie and Zhongfan Liu with their teams have made remarkable contributions in their field which has elevated their honor both individually and as our center’s members strengthening our collaboration worldwide.
