On May 10th, 2016, Prof. Zhong-Qun Tian (MCAS) and Prof. Shi-Gang Sun (MCAS) visited Xiamen Tungsten Co. Ltd., (XTC) together with other experts from Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials (iChEM) and Graphene Industry and Engineering Research Institute. The professors and other experts had a meeting with the Chairman of XTC Mr. Changgeng Huang and his management group members at XTC’s Technical Research Center to discuss the feasibility of comprehensive strategic cooperation between two parties and the ways and measures of cooperation.
XTC takes the responsibility as their own for developing Chinese tungsten and new energy materials industry based on the strategy of “Tungsten and rare earth metals as principle, and new energy materials and molybdenum (abbreviated as Mo) to be two wings.” XTC makes efforts to build the industrial chain of tungsten, rare earth and Mo, to develop technology of battery materials. Five remarkable ,even world wide achievements of XTC, already been made in the past 30 years, attracted the attention from central government to local governments at all levels and gained the government’s support as well. Now XTC is becoming an industry base with the most competitiveness of tungsten and new energy materials in the world. For this reason, XTC are now striving to invest in the original innovation, expect to make new breakthrough in new energy materials.
Xiamen University, with excellent subjects and teachers, is the leading university in China and also well-known in the world with advanced research level. XMU’s engineering and technology department comprised of nine engineering subjects takes the advantage to positively explore the effective model for university-industry cooperation and has been the stand point of “how universities serves the society”.
The Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials (iChEM) was led by Xiamen University (XMU), established jointly with Fudan University (FDU), University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) under the support of both MOE and MOF. iChEM integrated key innovative elements in “Energy materials chemistry” of China to promote the collaborative innovation of talents training, discipline construction and scientific research. Together with the advantage of XMU’s international advanced electrochemistry and iChEM’s two research platforms of new energy materials and chemical energy storage and conversion, it is promising to establish much relevant and highly efficient cooperative relations in the research fields with XTC. The strong cooperation based on XMU’s powerful fundamental research and XTC’s outstanding engineering unit will promote and enhance the efficiency of collaboration, complement each other’s advantage, contribute to China development and keep China at the forefront of international arena.

With mutual agreement, both parties have discussed the scheme and some detailed measures of making a comprehensive strategic cooperation. It is suggested to start the initial cooperation based on strategic partnership in new energy materials, catalysis, anticorrosion, materials computation, etc., to resolve the problems and overcome the difficulties appearing in collaboration by concerted efforts, finally to turn a new page in developing new energy materials.
After the meeting, Prof. Zhong-Qun Tian and Prof. Shi-Gang Sun and their party visited the exhibition hall of XTC guided by Director Mr. Yang Yu.
