Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a metal nano structure surface where free electron oscillate periodically under the incident light electric field. This effect makes metal nano structure perform many new properties, such as the selective absorption and scattering of visible light, enhancing local light electric field, and it is applied widely in the field of surface enhancing spectroscopy, optical waveguide, analysis and sensing. In recent years, it is found that exciting plasmon not only can speed up the reaction process and change the reaction mechanism, but also achieve the reactions which are impossible under common chemical conditions. Because this frontier refers to physics, chemistry, materials, and related subjects, it is highly interdisciplinary and still exist quite big difference for understanding the fundamental process, especially how the plasmon guide and enhance chemical reaction. Therefore, this frontier badly need convene top scientists from the fields of physics, chemistry, materials, etc., to deeply communicate from different subject perspectives regarding the fundamental physical principles, appliance methods and actual application, and to discuss the development of subjects as plasmon optics and nanometer spectrum, thereby to promote domestic young scholars exchange and cooperate deeply with their international peers.
Beijing Symposium 2016 on Chemical Reactions under External Fields – Nanoplasmonics and Nanospectroscopy, CRUEF 2016, is held in Xiamen on Apr. 2-5 in 2016, hosted by Department of Chemical Science, National Natural Science Foundation of China and Xiamen University, financially supported by Department of Chemical Science, NSFC. This symposium proposed the young scientists being established in the frontier of international scientific field, carrying out the work with Chinese characteristics and international influence, promoting international academic communication and cooperation, gradually form a serial international frontier symposium initiated and organized by Chinese young scientists. This meeting is one of the series of Beijing Symposium 2016.
Prof. Bing Ren, president of this symposium, researcher of iChEM from Xiamen University presided over the opening ceremony. Researcher Mr. Jun-Lin Yang from Division III of Chemical Science, NSFC, has made a speech at the opening ceremony on behalf of Department of Chemical Science, NSFC. Researcher Mr. Feixue Gao from NSFC also attended the meeting. More than forty representatives from different countries and regions participated in this meeting, including Prof. Jeremy Baumberg the Fellow of Royal Academy of Science, and Prof. Zhong-Qun Tian the director of 2011-iChEM. The representatives conducted active discussions about chemical reactions under external fields of optics, surface plasmon and electrochemistry and mechanics, characterization techniques for in situ high resolution chemical processes, and related theoretical methods of calculation. The meeting has three keynote and 28 invited reports, one poster with fast introduction and 14 posters. Prof. Martin Moskovits as the international authoritative of surface enhanced Raman spectrum, made a pre-lecture for the representatives, and comprehensively introduced the development history of surface enhanced Raman spectrum, surface plasmon and put forward the basic scientific problems existing.
The organizer has left enough time and created convenient atmosphere and environment for all representatives to have thorough academic discussions. Everyday there are two hours to communicate freely while walking and enjoying the sight of botanies in the garden. Meanwhile they can have further discussions about research cooperation affairs during coffee break. Prof. Novoselov, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2010 and iChEM Honored Distinguished Professor, who is also attracted by this meeting, specially came for the discussions of posters. The organizing committee has chosen four posters as “The Best Poster”.
The participants fully agreed that chemical reaction under external fields is a very frontier researching field, it is necessary to form a continuous theme international symposium. After the meeting, Prof. Murakoshi from Japan expressed his thanks by mail and said: “I deeply appreciate giving me a chance to attend nice workshop. I learnt much about the activities in this field. Active discussions with young researchers including brilliant Chinese students were also nice.” Prof. Qing-Hua Xu from Singapore also thanks the committee by email and said: “I would say this is the most useful conference that I have ever attended so far. I have learned a lot from speakers of this conference.” Dr. Cortes from Imperial College London wrote: I want to acknowledge you once more for such an amazing time and conference in Xiamen. It was a great pleasure for me to know all of you and the amazing things you are doing. I think it was one of the most fascinating conferences ever attended.” Prof. Yi Luo mentioned as: “I have I personally enjoyed it very much and already look forward to the next one.”
This meeting was hosted by State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surface (Xiamen University) , supported by 2011-iChEM and College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Xiamen University, and sponsored by enterprises as Renishaw, Horiba JY, Hwa-TECH, NT-MDT, etc.
