On 28th and 29th October, 2016, the 2nd International Symposium on Energy Chemistry and Materials (2nd ISECM) was held successfully in University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, which was organized by Collaborative Innovation Center for Chemistry of Energy Materials (iChEM) and hosted by USTC.
Firstly, Prof. Chusheng Chen as the Vice President of USTC attended this symposium and gave welcome address, extending his warm welcome to all the experts and scholars coming to 2nd ISECM from China and abroad, and introduced the development history of energy chemistry and materials of USTC, the research achievements made by USTC in this field, and the progress for talents training in this displine. He pointed out this symposium will significantly push forward the scientific research on energy materials and chemistry, and kindly hope the researchers can learn from each other, communicate with each other, and make great gains via this symposium. Prof. Chen also wishes this symposium a complete success.
After that the iChEM’s Director Prof. Can Li, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (MCAS) and also acting as the Dean of School of Chemistry and Materials Science of USTC, have made a brief introduction about iChEM and School of Chemistry and Materials Science of USTC, he said, with a focus on addressing China’s need, the iChEM was established for devoting to facilitate collaborative efforts that target major challenges in energy chemistry and would be otherwise impossible without collaboration among more than one individual or institution, and also to promote leapfrog development of materials discipline and chemistry discipline. The Chairman of this symposium Prof. Jinlong Yang, executive Dean of School of Chemistry and Materials Science of USTC, chaired this session and declared the opening of this symposium.

This symposium has invited and attracted more than 400 experts and scholars from ten countries all over the world respectively from Stanford University, Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH), Université de Strasbourg, University of Tokyo, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), The University of Adelaide, Argonne National Laboratory, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (DICP), Fudan University (FDU), Xiamen University (XMU), Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc. total forties universities and institutes.
At this symposium, total forty two presentations have been made, including eight plenary lectures presented by world-renowned senior experts, thirty keynotes by famous scholars in China and abroad, four invited postdoc lectures made by iChEM’s excellent postdocs, and total 161 posters have been exhibited.
This symposium has focused on the frontier scientific and technological progresses of the following five key areas to communicate and discuss: 1) Optimal Utilization of Carbon Resources; 2) Chemical Energy Storage and Conversion; 3) Solar Energy Conversion; 4) New Energy Material Research; 5) Characterization, Theory and X-Research. Total ten posters have been chosen as the Best Poster of this symposium, and the prizes have been awarded by the attended experts.

With active discussion atmosphere, this symposium has efficiently provided a very high level international platform for the researchers from energy materials and chemistry to exchange and has also promoted the deeply communication between different disciplines and stimulated interdisciplinary potentials, and made great contributions to guide and further push forward the innovation and development of energy chemistry and materials.
